Newport Hospital sponsors free diabetes prevention lecture

NEWPORT – Newport Hospital will offer a community lecture, “Sweet Success: How a Life Coach Can Help You Prevent Diabetes,” on Sept. 21, from 6:30–7:30 p.m. Penny Fitch, Newport Health Equity Zone resident consultant and a diabetes prevention program lifestyle coach, will lead a discussion on how individuals can act proactively to help prevent or delay developing the disease.

“By making a few basic lifestyle modifications such as eating healthily and increasing activity, it is possible for people to lower or eliminate their risk for diabetes,” Fitch said in a statement from Newport Hospital, a Lifespan facility. “Even moderate weight loss can significantly improve a person’s health and reduce his or her likelihood of developing diabetes and other diseases.”

According to Fitch, a recent study by the National Institutes of Health demonstrated that 58 percent of individuals who focused on losing weight and being more active were able to successfully cut their diabetes risk; those older than age 60 cut their risk by 71 percent.

The lecture will be held in Newport Hospital’s Gudoian Conference Room, just off the hospital’s main lobby at 11 Friendship St., Newport. There is valet parking; registration is not required, but seating is limited. To reserve a seat, call (401) 845-1492 or sign up at . Free blood pressure screenings will also be provided from 6–6:30 p.m., and light refreshments will be served.
