Newport celebrates anniversary

NEWPORT – The city will celebrate its 375th anniversary on April 28 with publication of a new book, exhibits and the launch of reproduction shoes.
The Newport Historical Society is publishing the book, “Newport History Bytes: Fifty Fast Facts,” which is a compilation of nuggets of local history from a popular “History Bytes” blog. The book is due out in early summer.
Partnering with American Duchess, a manufacturer of historical footwear and reproduction shoes, the historical society will reproduce a pair of Edwardian-era lady’s shoes from its collection. The shoe will be available for purchase in late 2014 online and at the society’s Brick Market Museum & Shop. This is the first in a line of reproductions based on items from the historical society’s collections.
Coming exhibits include, “Fifty Objects That Shaped Rhode Island History,” in partnership with and curated by the Rhode Island Historical Society, at the Newport Antiques Show; and “Newport Then & Now.” The latter is a photographic exhibit featuring Newport scenes and landmarks interpreted by local artist Lew Keen. His show, which illustrates changes in the Newport streetscape over time, opens at the Colony House this summer.
The Newport Historical Society has collected and preserved the artifacts, photographs, documents,
publications, and genealogical records that relate to the history of Newport County since 1854.
