Newport named 5th best small city in country

NEWPORT – Readers of Conde Nast Traveler have voted Newport one of the best small cities in America for the publication’s 26th annual Readers’ Choice Awards.

The rankings, based on 1.3 million votes from nearly 80,000 readers who participated in the 2013 survey, were published last week. Santa Fe, N.M., claimed the top spot in the list of best small cities for its “art, architecture, food and crafts” reflecting Native American, Spanish and Mexican culture.

Newport ranked fifth and was the only city in the Northeast to make the list.

“The City by the Sea, at the southern tip of Aquidneck Island, is bursting with an unparalleled collection of colonial buildings, jaw-dropping Golden Age mansions (“summer cottages” for the Vanderbilts and their ilk), and long beaches,” wrote Conde Nast Traveler.
