TAMPA, Fla. – Newport has been ranked the fifth most enjoyable and hospitable coastal city in the United States by Coastal Living Magazine, which called it the “crown jewel” of Rhode Island.
The magazine’s annual list cited the city’s attraction of international visitors and tourists, rich seafaring industry and coastal Cliff Walk as its strongest qualities, while also supporting the free-thinking historic spirit of Anne Hutchinson and the city’s other founders.
Tourists, the magazine said, were also drawn to its commercial variety, hotels and culinary delights. The International Tennis Hall of Fame was also recognized for its “pristine grass courts and shingled veranda.”
The magazine ranked each reader-nominated destination in its yearly top 10 city list using Gallup-Healthways’ Well-Being Index, as well as sunny weather statistics, beach cleanliness, commuting convenience and standard of living indicators.

In all, three New England locations ranked in the top 10, including Harwich Port, Mass., which was ranked No. 2 and Rowayton, Conn., which ranked No. 6 and Kennebunkport, Maine, which ranked No. 7.
