PROVIDENCE – It isn’t hard to believe that Newport could top Providence on a list of the 10 most exciting places in Rhode Island, but Chepachet, Harrisville and Woonsocket?
The list, created by Movoto, an online real estate brokerage based in San Mateo, Calif., even addresses the issue, saying that sixth place Providence wasn’t ranked higher “because we ranked its excitement per capita.”
Makes one wonder how the folks at Movoto rank “excitement,” but they did state that food, art, nightlife, outdoor activities and percentage of young people all were taken into account as it evaluated 24 of the most populated places in the Ocean State.
Movoto said Providence had the second youngest population, is home to a handful of colleges and universities, and has the second most music venues, and the third most arts and nightlife per capita.
No. 1 Newport was noted for its beaches, architecture and the most music venues and active life, arts and restaurant listings per capita.
Second place Chepachet, a village in Glocester, “may not exactly have the number of young people that Newport, or say, Providence does, but what it lacked in a young crowd it certainly made up for in its high number of nightlife options, arts and lack of fast food per capita,” the website wrote.
Beach town Westerly came in at No. 3 and tied with Newport for its lack of fast food restaurants per capita.
Burrillville village Harrisville ranked fourth on the list largely thanks to its many pizzerias.
Fifth place Woonsocket was heralded for its restaurants, and number of the music venues and bars, some of the most per capita in the state.
Central Falls (No. 7) was lauded for its food options; Tiverton (No. 8) was highlighted for outdoor activities, gyms and sporting goods stores. A second Burrillville village, Pascoag , ranked No. 9 thanks to its arts, restaurants and nightlife. Hope Valley, located in Hopkinton, ranked No. 10 thanks to its parks and outdoor activities.
Movoto describes Rhode Island as “tiny,” but says “that doesn’t mean it isn’t packed with awesome.”
