NEWPORT – The 2012 Neighborhoods of Newport House Tour, a benefit for St. Michael’s School, offers exclusive entry to six of the city’s most architecturally significant privately owned homes and takes place on April 29.

Included on the tour, for the first time, will be Gray Craig, the former home of actor Nicolas Cage, a stone residence and gatehouse nationally recognized for its early 1900s architecture.

“Of course [that’s] the big draw,” said Roselle McConnell, house tour co-chair. “It’s absolutely gorgeous and the new owners are meticulously restoring the estate, making sure it is done well.”

Also featured will be Chepstow, open on the tour for the first time, a property owned by the Preservation Society of Newport and designed by 19th-century architect George Champlin Mason between 1860 and 1861.

The house tour, operated a total of 13 times since its inception in 1995, will now move to run every other year. The committee has set the next tour for spring 2014. McConnell said the group is hoping for close to 1,000 visitors.

Recently named one of “America’s Prettiest Towns” by Forbes magazine, Newport’s house tour has been conducted since 1995 and since then has featured more than 55 private homes.

Tickets are $35 before Friday, April 27 and $40 after that. The tour is sponsored by Franklin & Co. Design Associates of Newport.

St. Michael’s Country Day School is an independent, coeducational school for children in preschool through grade eight.
