NEWPORT – A 2014 Neighborhoods of Newport House Tour set for April 27 will benefit St. Michael’s Country Day School and the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center.
The spring show provides entry to seven architecturally significant and private homes in Newport and Middletown. These include two houses by late 19th century architects McKim, Mead & White; a new classically styled home on a 15-acre property in the Ocean Drive area; and a recently restored 18th century farmhouse. The farmhouse also will host a book signing for “Getaways and Retreats” by California-based interior designer Barclay Butera.
The sites include Hillside, Bellevue House, the Commodore William Edgar House, Ossory House, the Isaac Bell House, Wind Shadows and Paradise Farms.
Among the highlights of the tour is a stunning entry hall with spiral staircase at the Bellevue House; a drawing room re-imagined as a kitchen and great room at the Commodore House with a painted trompe l’oeil ceiling; and an array of daffodils and gardens at Hillside.
The day school is an independent, nondenominational, coeducational school for students in preschool through grade 8. The nonprofit center is an independent resource for people in Newport County focused on child development, hunger relief, and helping individuals reach their potential.
Franklin & Company Design Associates of Newport is the tour sponsor.
Touring hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Advance tickets cost $60 if purchased before April 25. After that, tickets are $75 each. Bus transportation is provided. The ticket includes admission to the book signing at Paradise Farmhouse from 2 to 5 p.m. April 27. A cash bar will be available.
All tickets will be held for pickup at the school on 180 Rhode Island Ave., and will be available for pickup starting on April 25. Tickets also may be purchased online at www.newporthousetour.com.
Tour restrictions include no photos allowed; no children under age 12; no pets; and visitors must remove shoes before entering each house.
