Newport voters will face table-game question again

NEWPORT – Voters here will again face a vote on whether Newport Grand should add table games, after the City Council approved a casino referendum on the Election Day ballot, the Newport Daily News reported.
The referendum will need General Assembly approval to find its way to the ballot, but the legislature is unlikely to reject the council’s request, the newspaper noted.
Two years ago, Newport voters rejected a ballot question that would permit table games at the facility. Voters statewide and in Lincoln approved a ballot question allowing table games at Twin River.
Developers Joseph A. Paolino, Peter de Savary and Paul G. Roiff have signed a letter of agreement to buy Newport Grand and spend $40 million to turn it into a European-style casino. The agreement is contingent on voters approving table games in November.
The resolution being forwarded to the legislature asks that the ballot question include restrictions that will limit any gambling in the city to its current site, the Daily News reported. •
