PROVIDENCE – With today’s deadline set by the R.I. Attorney General’s about to expire for closing the deal on Steward Health Care’s purchase of Landmark Medical Center and the Rehabilitation Hospital of Rhode Island, much of the discussion in Superior Court before Judge Michael A. Silverstein at the scheduled hearing today occurred in the judge’s chambers or in sidebars with the judge.

Afterward, the parties – including Jodi Bourque representing the Attorney General and Bill Fischer, the public relations consultant representing Special Master Jonathan N. Savage – all declined comment.

Repeated questions attempting to clarify what Savage had said in court – referring to his statement to the judge that he was hopeful that there would be a resolution “by the middle to the end of next week” – were also met with no comment by Savage and Fischer.

The only clarifying question that was answered in court was to Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island’s lawyer Joseph M. DiOrio’s inquiry whether or not an agreement had been reached with Thundermist Health Center, one of the conditions of the latest Asset Purchase Agreement. Savage responded that he was “not aware” of any such agreement.

The receivership of Landmark under Savage has now gone on for more than four years and the special master’s 29th interim report and request for fees for $70,804 was approved by Silverstein.
