ANNE NOLAN WILL step down as president of Crossroads Rhode Island next year.

PROVIDENCE – Anne Nolan, president of Crossroads Rhode Island, is retiring June 1, and a search for her successor will begin in January.
“It’s time,” said Nolan. “I’ve been here 14 years and I think it’s time for new blood and new energy.”
Founded in 1894 as Travelers Aid, Crossroads Rhode Island is a homeless organization that employs 130 staff and relies on hundreds of short-term volunteers and dozens of long-term volunteers, Nolan said.
The nonprofit has two “very qualified candidates,” and the Board of Directors has formed a committee to conduct a regional search, said Nolan and Board of Directors Chairman Jack McConnell, a U.S. District Court judge in Providence.
McConnell praised the outgoing president for growing and re-focusing the $13 million nonprofit and positioning it well for the future.
“She has basically taken an organization that services folks in our state when they’re about as down and out as they can get and she’s addressed their needs with respect, dignity and effective service,” McConnell said.
Nolan has “professionalized” operations, assured that volunteers’ and donors’ contributions are “well stewarded,” and refocused the mission with “Housing First,” a recognition of the importance of safe housing as “the most important service we can provide somebody when they find themselves homeless,” McConnell said.
The search begins in earnest at the start of the new year, McConnell added.
“We intend to look far and wide for the best person and it may be we find the best one right under our nose,” he said.
