MIDDLETOWN – The U.S. Department of Defense’s Defense Security Service has presented 2014 James S. Cogswell Outstanding Industrial Security Achievement Awards to the Northrop Grumman Corp. facility in Middletown, where Northrop Grumman develops, operates and maintains maritime training systems, including high-fidelity PC simulation systems and combat system trainers for U.S. Navy submarines and surface warfare.

The Middletown location was among 40 facilities selected to receive the Cogswell Award from a field of 13,300 defense contractors eligible for recognition. Northrop Grumman facilities in McClellan Park, Calif., and Charlottesville, Va., as well as a General Dynamics C4 Systems Inc. facility in Taunton were also among the 2014 winners.

Selection criteria for the annual award include establishing and sustaining a security program exceeding industry standards and providing leadership to other cleared facilities in establishing best practices to maintain security standards. Facilities are nominated by a DSS industrial security representative and must have achieved two consecutive “superior” DSS ratings.

The awards were presented at the 50th annual National Classification Management Society training seminar June 17 at the Gaylord National Resort in National Harbor, Md.

The Cogswell Award, established in 1966, is named in honor of the late U.S. Air Force Col. James S. Cogswell, the first chief of industrial security in the U.S. Department of Defense.
