WARWICK – To kick off local Memorial Day celebrations, Operation Stand Down Rhode Island plans to host its first Gold Star Gala at the Crowne Plaza Providence-Warwick in Warwick on Thursday, May 25.

An evening event, scheduled for 5:30-11 p.m., the first Gold Star Gala will honor the Ocean State’s gold star families – a family that has lost an immediate relative who was serving in a branch of the U.S. military during wartime.

The first annual gala will also mark the beginning of Memorial Day weekend celebrations, including the Boots on the Ground for Heroes Memorial at Roger Williams Park in Providence. The Boots memorial commemorates U.S. service men and women killed in action after the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. Last year, nearly 7,000 boots were placed by the organization to mark lives lost in action since that day.

Single tickets for the Gold Star Gala are $75 and sponsorship opportunities are available starting at $250 and ranging to $5,000. Proceeds from the gala will benefit the Boots memorial and OSDRI’s Heroes Endowment Fund.
