NORTH KINGSTOWN – On Tuesday, Jan. 15, Ocean State Job Lot will make a record donation to food banks in Rhode Island, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont.

On the 15th, a convoy of 10 tractor trailer trucks loaded with the equivalent of 333,330 meals will depart Job Lot’s warehouse with a R.I. State Police escort to deliver the nutritious, shelf-stable food to food banks in the region.

According to Job Lot, this marks the largest single food donation of its kind by a private company in New England.

The gift was funded by matching donations from Job Lot customers. In seven states, Job Lot customers were invited to donate $1 at the register through Dec. 31 to help buy food for local food banks via the “Three Square Meals” program. Job Lot matched the first $100,000 of donations made by shoppers.

The customer donations and matching amount totaled more than $1.2 million – the equivalent of 60 tractor trailer loads of food. Job Lot also donates all purchasing logistics, administration, management, delivery labor and fuel to ensure that 100 percent of donated funds are used to alleviate hunger in the New England area.

“Our Three Square Meals event is intended to bring attention to and help alleviate the growing food crisis in our region,” Ocean State Job Lot Owner and Partner Alan Perlman, said in prepared remarks. “We are pleased to partner with our customers in charitable initiatives, chief among them the important fight on hunger.”

Including the Jan. 15 delivery, the Three Square Meals program is expected to distribute more than 60 tractor trailer loads of food throughout 2013 to 10 food banks and pantries across New England and New York.

Items to be distributed include shelf-stable food such as pasta, cereal, canned vegetables and fruit, soup, canned tuna, dried beans and rice, among other things.

“Food banks are seeing unprecedented need due to the economic conditions we’re experiencing. People shy away from asking for help and many families go hungry every day,” said Perlman. “We’re stepping up with the support of our customers and encouraging other business partners to join this effort.”
