WARWICK- A group of anonymous donors has presented Ocean State Theatre Co. with a $150,000 matching challenge grant, the professional nonprofit performance group announced on Monday.
The donors will match all donations given to OSTC until Dec. 31, 2013, for up to $150,000.
“This is by far the largest gift we have ever received and a wonderful testament to the work we are doing,” OSTC’s Producing Artistic Director Amiee Turner said in a statement. “To know that what we have been working so hard to bring to our fellow Rhode Islanders is valued and supported is a wonderful feeling.”
The donation comes at a critical time for the company, which has just transitioned from a summer only to a yearlong organization and will kick off its first full season this fall with a production of “Les Miserables.”
Turner called the past year of production “challenging” and recognized the much needed help the sizeable donation will provide. Along with the transition into a year round company, OSTC has gone through the construction of a new theater in Warwick and the growth of its staff from seven to 27.
“In order for us to maintain the quality of our productions, expand our educational programs, continue employing professional musicians to play live music during musical performances, and reinvigorate our nationally recognized Intern/Apprentice Program, they must be subsidized to ensure accessibility,” said OSTC’s Board Chair, Anthony Miccolis.
“Contributions from both individuals and corporations are an essential ingredient. This gift tells us that folks want a professional regional theatre like OSTC in Warwick,” he added.
Donations can be made by telephone, on the OSTC website and the box office.
