Office Recycling Solutions receives industry certifications

EAST GREENWICH – Office Recycling Solutions, a New England electronic waste recycler, has received new industry certifications.

In October, the company received its R2:2013 accreditation and Recycling Industry Operating Standard accreditation. It also was R2 certified to the 2008 standard last year, and is one of three R2 certified companies in the state.

The purpose of the R2/RIOS certification is for electronics recyclers to demonstrate to customers that electronics equipment is being recycled with the highest standards of environmental protection, worker health and safety, data privacy and facility security.

“Used electronics are one of the fastest growing segments of the waste stream,” Brent M. Mancuso, Office Recycling Solutions, said in a statement.

He said electronics contain materials that can be hazardous to the environment and human health if handled improperly. Mercury, cadmium, phosphors and lead are common in electronics, as well as plastics and flame retardants, which can contaminate the environment if sent to a landfill or disposed of improperly. Many of the materials, he said, can cause birth defects, respiratory illness, cancer or other serious ailments.

The company began in January 2006 after seeing a need for responsible recycling for consumers and businesses, Mancuso said. It then expanded into municipal eWaste, he said.

Office Recycling Solutions recycles all electronic items, including televisions, monitors, flat screens, window air unit air conditioners, microwaves, dehumidifiers, computers, keyboards, spare computer parts, laptops, network equipment, mice, laser printers, routers, radios, scanners, fax machines, phones and more.

Mancuso said the service is free for residents, schools and non-profits, With businesses, there can sometimes be a fee, but he said it depends on the amount, and he asks that businesses call the company first for a quote.

The company has a drop off location at its main warehouse, 65 Rocky Hollow Road, East Greenwich, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

It also accepts small quantities from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturdays, at 776 Main St., East Greenwich; 709 Quaker Lane, West Warwick; 1744 Mineral Spring Ave., and North Providence.

Mancuso said the company is the official e-waste recycler for the large majority of cities and towns in the state, so residents can go to their local department of public works (or transfer station) and drop off their e-waste free of charge. He said those items all come back to the facility in East Greenwich for processing.

“For schools and non-profits, we will actually go out and pick-up for them free of charge,” he said.
