Office of Higher Ed. launches new college program

Posted 4/4/12

PROVIDENCE - The Office of Higher Education launched its new Access and Persistence Program, which is designed to prepare nontraditional students for college and improve student retention.

The program – announced Wednesday – will run through the state’s College Access Challenge Grant.

Using funds from the $1.5 million program – whose renewal was announced at today’s press conference – the University of Rhode Island and Rhode Island College will run program projects through September 2013.

“To strengthen our workforce and improve our state’s economy, we must always be seeking ways to increase the number of Rhode Islanders who pursue post-secondary educational opportunities,” said Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee.

The grant requires a $750,000 annual match from the state and can be used for student outreach, need-based financial assistance as well as other programs that promote high education.

URI intends to use its grant money to launch Project Recruit and Educate Local At-Risk Adults and Youth aimed to recruit under-represented groups and older adults with some college education.

RIC will develop Learning for Life, a program centered on strengthening its efforts in community-college partnerships targeting to at-risk students through academic, social and financial support services.
