Officials mark start of treatment-facility work

WARWICK – State, local and federal officials were scheduled last week to celebrate the groundbreaking for $17 million in improvements at the Warwick Wastewater Treatment Facility.
The ceremony marked the beginning of construction for improvements to the levee that surrounds the facility and was breached during the March 2010 floods, which submerged the facility.
The state’s congressional delegation and Warwick Mayor Scott Avedisian in June jointly announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency had approved funding for the project, up to $3.6 million, to mitigate flooding hazards by raising the levee more than 5 feet.
Additionally, construction will also begin on a new system that removes phosphorous from wastewater. The addition of a new treatment process will allow the Warwick Sewer Authority to more effectively remove phosphorous, resulting in less of the nutrient being discharged into the Pawtuxet River.
The improvements to Warwick’s wastewater-treatment facility were designed by AECOM Technical Services Inc. of Wakefield, Mass., and will be constructed by Hart Engineering Corp. of Cumberland. •
