CRANSTON – The hurricane season started today and runs through Nov. 30, and the R.I. Emergency Management Agency is advising Rhode Islanders to prepare for it.

Creating a communications plan and making a list of essential care items can help keep families and businesses safer this season, Gov. Gina M. Raimondo said.

“We are through a challenging winter, but we do not know what the weather has in store for the rest of the year,” Raimondo said in a statement. “I will be collaborating across state agencies to make sure we are as prepared as possible for the upcoming hurricane and tropical-storm season, but I also want to encourage all Rhode Islanders to prepare too.”

RIEMA Director Peter Gaynor said even though the hurricane season began Monday, he said the Atlantic coast has already experienced a “named storm.”

“Hurricane disasters can occur whether the season is active or relatively quiet. It only takes one hurricane, or tropical storm, to cause a disaster. We encourage Rhode Islanders to visit our website at www.riema.ri.gov where they can find tools and information necessary to prepare their homes and businesses,” Gaynor said.

In addition RIEMA, along with the Rhode Island Association of Emergency Managers and the Community College of Rhode Island’s Emergency Management and Homeland Security Program, will host its two-day annual Preparedness Conference on Aug. 25-26 at CCRI’s Knight Campus.

The theme of this year’s conference is “Be Rhody Ready: An All-Hazards Approach to Community Preparedness.” Speakers, training opportunities, forums and exhibitors will be featured throughout the two-day event.

The invite-only conference is geared for emergency managers, municipalities and relative state agencies and non-governmental organizations. Anyone interested in becoming an exhibitor for the conference can contact RIEMA at (401) 946-9996.
