Only two bids for commuter rail contract

BOSTON - Only French rail operator Keolis’ subsidiary, Keolis America Inc., has bid to challenge the Massachusetts Bay Commuter Rail for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority commuter rail contract, reported The Boston Globe.

The current contract holder – the Massachusetts Bay Commuter Rail – has run the Bay State’s commuter trains since 2003.

According to the Globe, 26 firms originally expressed interest in the contract, but most dropped out over concerns that the Massachusetts Bay Commuter Rail would have an inside track on the MBTA contract.

With daily service to more than 70,000 riders and worth more than $1 billion, the MBTA’s commuter rail contract is seen as the most lucrative in North America, reported the news source.
