PROVIDENCE – Looking for a romantic destination to bring your sweetheart on Valentine’s Day? You don’t have to travel very far.
Rhode Island happens to be home to two of the 25 most romantic cities in America, according to OpenTable, an online dining reservation website.
Providence ranks third on the list, and Newport wasn’t far behind at No. 7.
The website notes Providence dining destinations such as Café Nuovo, Camille’s, The Capital Grille, Capriccio, CAV, Gracie’s, Hemenway’s, Jacky’s Waterplace Restaurant, Pot au Feu, Providence Oyster Bar and Siena.
And Newport’s restaurant list features 22 Bowens, Bouchard Restaurant and Inn, Castle Hill Inn, The Mooring, The Spiced Pear and White Horse Tavern, to name a few.
“It’s no secret that America has become a country of foodies, but our analysis revealed that we’re also a nation of hungry romantics,” OpenTable wrote on its website.
The most romantic cities index was calculated using the percentage of restaurants rated “romantic” according to OpenTable diner reviews, the percentage of tables seated for two and the percentage of people who dined out for Valentine’s Day last year.
“This list makes it clear that romance is alive and well in cities in all corners of the country, from the glamorous gambling meccas of Atlantic City and Las Vegas to urban areas with a decidedly down-home feel, such as Charleston and San Antonio,” Caroline Potter, chief dining officer of OpenTable, said.
She quoted food writer M.F.K. Fisher, who once noted that sharing a meal is in and of itself “an intimate act.”
Atlantic City in New Jersey was rated No. 1, and San Antonio, Texas was No. 2.
This wasn’t Providence’s first time on the list – it earned a mention in 2013.
