O’Grady wants safer school cleaning products

PROVIDENCE – Rep. Jeremiah T. O’Grady, D-Lincoln, has proposed setting guidelines that encourage the use of healthier cleaning products in schools. The move is intended to prevent suffering and lost school days among the many children with asthma.
The legislation would require the R.I. Department of Education, in consultation with the R.I. Department of Health and other agencies and organizations, to develop and regularly update guidelines and specifications for “environmentally preferable” cleaning and maintenance products, equipment and paper for use in school facilities. School departments would be expected to start purchasing environmentally preferable products after they deplete their current supplies. •
