MILWAUKEE – Providence Business News took a silver award for its 25th anniversary special edition in the Alliance of Area Business Publications' 2012 Editorial Excellence Award program. The award was presented at the organization’s recently concluded summer conference.
Titled “PBN 25 Years: The Leaders and Achievers, the Highs and the Lows,” the 128-page book marked PBN's quarter century through a timeline of events, recognition of 25 community leaders, stories about the industries and businesses that make up the region’s economy, a collection of Top Lists showing changes they have undergone in the last 25 years as well as all PBN’s recognition award program winners and two roundtable discussions, one with business community leaders, the other with five of the seven living (at the time) governors of the state. The book also included a section of self-portraits done by 11 local businesses.
PBN’s winning publication was one of 108 recognized out of 657 entries from 51 publications from across the United States.
The second place award came in the Best Ancillary Publication category, with the contest judges noting that the “special edition took us through 25 years of business history in Providence that concisely and effectively showed the evolution of a community. Also, both the writing and the design helped tell the stories of who is in place now and what the plans are for the future with the context of the past. The publication uses typography well, especially in its extensive timeline.”
The 25th-anniversary special edition was a product of the entire PBN staff and was published in May 2011 to coincide with a gala celebration marking the event at Marble House in Newport.
In other conference news, PBN President & Publisher Roger C. Bergenheim completed his one-year term as president of the AABP.
PBN took home a first place award in last year’s competition in the Best Coverage of Local Breaking News category for its online and print coverage of the March 2010 floods and aftermath.
The judging for the competition took place at the University of Missouri School of Journalism; judges included both faculty and experienced journalists from across the country.
