PROVIDENCE – Providence Business News has selected seven organizations and two individuals to receive recognition for excellence, leadership and community service at the publication’s 13th annual Business Excellence Awards, one of the region’s longest-running and best-known business recognition programs.

Dr. Timothy J. Babineau, CEO of Lifespan, will be recognized for his business leadership.

Babineau – who serves on the boards of the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce, the Rhode Island Quality Institute and the University HealthSystem Consortium – has been the driving force behind Lifespan’s adoption of new methods to improve operations and patients’ experience at Lifespan hospitals.

“Through Dr. Babineau’s leadership, Lifespan is moving from a hospital-centric focus to a patient-centric focus,” said his BEA nomination. “His steadfast focus on the pursuit of excellence has transformed the organization to continuously strive to provide exceptional care and service.”

Constance Howes, executive vice president of Care New England, will be recognized for her corporate citizenship and more than 30 years of service at Women & Infants Hospital.

Under Howes’ leadership, Women & Infants received national recognition as a Center of Excellence in Women’s Health and increased its research funding from $4 million in 2002 to $17 million in 2012. She has been actively involved in fundraising efforts for Women and Infants Hospital, the March of Dimes and the American Heart Association.

“For the past two years, Connie has truly put her ‘money where her mouth is,’ issuing a challenge to all Women & Infants employees to increase participation and giving to the employee campaign,” her BEA nomination said.
