NASHVILLE, Tenn. – PBN.com was named the second-best website in the nation among members of the Alliance of Area Business Publications at the organization’s annual editorial excellence contest. The results of the contest, which included 573 entries from 44 publications from across the United States, were announced Saturday at the association’s summer conference, which was held in Nashville from June 20-22.
In giving Providence Business News a silver award, judges in the competition, who were chosen from among the University of Missouri’s School of Journalism faculty, said that “As paywalls become the norm in our industry, this publication has struck a balance in offering free and premium content in order to attract both casual and loyal readers. The site is easy to navigate and has a design that facilitates use. Stories are updated regularly both in highly trafficked areas and deep within the site.”
The site was judged before PBN.com adopted a metered model at the end of May, detailed HERE, although the architecture of the site and the mix of stories produced for print and online reading has remained the same since the change. PBN.com also received recognition earlier this year, as it took home first place honors for website design at the New England Newspaper and Press Association’s annual Better Newspaper Competition.
PBN took a silver award last year in the Best Ancillary Publication category of the AABP editorial excellence competition for its May 2011 special section marking its 25th anniversary. And two years ago, PBN won the first place, gold award in the breaking news category for its coverage of the March 2010 floods.
Other gold award winners among the 37 contest categories announced at the awards banquet included:
