PROVIDENCE – The Providence Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau is joining in the Pokémon GO craze with a series of blogs on the GoProvidence.com website, highlighting Pokestops in popular Providence locations.
Pokémon GO, launched July 6, is an app that uses augmented reality and encourages local exploration in order to hunt for creatures called Pokémon, collect prizes from local landmarks known as Pokestops, and battle other gamers at gym locations.
Providence hosts more than 200 Pokestops, 10 gyms, and a wide range of Pokémon, according to PWCVB.
The game forces people of the house and to explore the world outside, but that can be stressful for some players. Pokestops, gyms and Pokémon appear only when the player is at the current geographical location. In other words, unless the gamer knows the area, they can be walking blindly into new territory.
PWCVB has taken it upon itself to help and has mapped out each stop and gym location, even local sightings of Pokémon, in a blog series. In addition, the bureau has launched the hashtag #PokeGoProv in order to stimulate conversation of Pokémon experiences, inspire events and build a sense of comradery.
The blog series has already highlighted the RiverWalk and Federal Hill. The series will continue over the course of the next week and will cover Providence’s most popular geographic areas. Some locations include South Main Street/Roger Williams Memorial Park, downtown Providence, Benefit Street, the Statehouse area, the West Side, Wickenden Street/India Point Park, and more.
