WARWICK – Passenger traffic at T.F. Green Airport rose 3.1 percent in April to 317,271 from 307,668 in April 2015, the R.I. Airport Corp. said Thursday.
Among the major carriers, American Airlines had the largest year-over-year increase at 5.8 percent, to 75,324 compared with 71,169 a year ago. United Airlines had the greatest decrease at 8.8 percent, to 21,543 from 23,631.
JetBlue was the only other carrier to report a decrease at 4.8 percent, to 23,443 from 24,616.
Delta Airlines and Southwest Airlines also reported year-over-year increases, of 3.2 percent and 4.3 percent respectively. Delta had 37,984 passengers in March, while Southwest, the airport’s dominant carrier, had 156,693.
TACV Cabo Verde Airlines, which flies year-round to Cape Verde, had 2,066 passengers in April. The airline started offering service from Green last June so a year-over-year comparison is unavailable. Year to date, it has had 7,221 passengers.
Year to date, passenger traffic at the airport increased 4.3 percent to 1,122,776 from 1,076,246.
In other news, Southwest announced Thursday it will be offering twice-daily nonstop service directly to Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C., starting Nov. 6.
Southwest spokesman Dan Landson said, “We’ve seen a lot of demand from the business community to get into the heart of DC. This will help make it easier to go Capitol to Capitol and bring the two cities closer.”

American also offers service to Washington from Green.
Southwest began operations at Green in October 1996 with 14 daily flights to five destinations including Baltimore, Chicago Midway, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and more. The airline now offers up to 20 daily departures from Green.
