Patriots foundation donates to Sojourner House

PROVIDENCE – The domestic violence awareness agency Sojourner House accepted the second of two matching $50,000 donations from the New England Patriots Community Foundation from former player Andre Tippett on May 18.

Vanessa Volz, executive director of Sojourner House, first learned about the donation from a personal cellphone call with New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who has committed $1.6 million to five domestic violence agencies in Massachusetts, in addition to Sojourner House, as part of an antiviolence initiative.

“We are so grateful to the New England Patriots for stepping up and supporting our programs and services. Our transitional housing program allows survivors of domestic violence and their children to live in their own safe space while receiving the critical services they need to rebuild their lives. Their support will help us expand this much-needed program,” she said.

Tippet, now the team’s executive director of community affairs, presented the donation, which will help purchase three additional transitional housing apartments in Providence as well as hire another case manager.

He commended the work of Sojourner House and said the team was humbled to be involved.
“The New England Patriots organization understands the impact domestic abuse has on so many lives, and we are committed to helping worthy organizations like Sojourner House in their efforts to provide services and support for victims,” he added.
The first half of the donation was gifted last fall with the pledge to match up to $50,000 for any funds raised through the end of April. Sojourner House raised $56,000 and was able to benefit from the full matching gift.
