PROVIDENCE – The bets were on, and after the New England Patriots’ 28-24 Super Bowl win over the Seattle Seahawks, an influx of Washington-based goods are coming to Rhode Island.
Westerly’s Washington Trust Co. bet on the Patriots to win, and its opponent in the bet was none other than Washington Trust Bank, headquartered in Spokane, Wash.
And because the Patriots won, the losing CEO – in this case Peter Stanton – has to don a Patriots jersey and hat for a week, and post photos on social media. The bank also has to change the color scheme of its Facebook and Twitter pages to the Patriots’ colors for a day.
And, Joseph J. MarcAurele, the winning Washington Trust CEO, will soon get a basket of local Washington products from Stanton.

MarcAurele also is a former Patriot himself. Out of college at Holy Cross, he signed on as a free agent with the New England Patriots, where he made it through training camp.

“I’m thrilled that the Patriots won Sunday’s big-game, and even more thrilled that I won’t have to wear Seattle’s colors this week. This was a really fun challenge, and a great way for us to do something with our similarly named colleagues in the Northwest,” MarcAurele said.

In a similar bet, Providence Mayor Jorge O. Elorza will receive a basket full of goods from Seattle Mayor Ed Murray, including items Seattle is known for – Northwest alder-smoked salmon from Pure Food Fish Market, whole bean coffees from the original Starbucks at Pike Place Market and a giant bag of Skittles, thanks to the Patriots win.
If the Patriots had lost, Murray would have received items from Elorza including Olneyville New York System hot wiener sauce spice mix, sweet bread from El Quetzal Bakery, Trinity Brew House IPA, and music by Deer Tick and the Low Anthem.
