PAWTUCKET – The Apex building at 100 Main St. is on the radar of the owners of the Pawtucket Red Sox.

The Valley Breeze quoted a PawSox spokesman as saying that the Apex site and others are being considered for a new stadium. Apex is a retail store.

Contacted by telephone, Bill Wanless, PawSox spokesman, declined to comment on the report. He released the following statement:

“All along, we have acknowledged that we receive inquiries from time to time from various entities, whether they be in Pawtucket, elsewhere in Rhode Island, or beyond. Despite these inquiries, our efforts have been focused with the city and the state on the McCoy Study, which we hope will reach its conclusions by next week, and we remain focused on doing what we can to keep the PawSox in Pawtucket.”

The building, with its unusual ziggurat-style roof, overlooks Interstate 95, has highway access and is on the riverfront. The existing stadium is tucked in a residential neighborhood.

Built in 1958, the 100,000-square-foot Apex property is owned by the Apex Development Co. and valued at $4.3 million, according to data on Vision Government Solutions’ website.

The company released a statement Wednesday afternoon that said in part, that the company is “engaged in ongoing conversations with a number of interested parties, including the Pawtucket Red Sox and other potential retail, office and restaurant tenants.”

Meanwhile, results of a feasibility study for the 75-year-old McCoy Stadium – the team’s longtime home – are expected to be released this month. The study is determining the cost and improvements needed to bring the stadium in line with state-of-the-art AAA ballparks.

Mayor Donald R. Grebien said in a statement that keeping the franchise in Pawtucket and at McCoy are his top priorities.

“The state, city and PawSox have been working with the consultant as defined in the RFP to determine the feasibility and economic potential at the site. This partnership is focused on maintaining this premier recreational amenity for the residents of Pawtucket and Rhode Island for years to come,” Grebien said.

“As the mayor of this great city, I have the obligation to the residents to protect their interests through a transparent process. This study is doing just that. It will answer the questions that many residents and Rhode Islanders had over the years in regard to the true costs and value of investment needed at this facility. I look forward to sharing and discussing the results in the coming weeks once this study has been completed,” Grebien said.

PawSox officials abandoned a controversial plan to build a new stadium on Providence’s riverfront two years ago after public opposition. The PawSox have since recommitted the team to Pawtucket.
