PAWTUCKET – With only five games to go this season, attendance at Pawtucket Red Sox games is below last year’s level, according to information from the AAA minor league baseball team.
It could be because the PawSox are in last place this season, just like their major league affiliate, the Boston Red Sox. A PawSox official said that the team tends to attract more fans when the Boston Red Sox are doing well.
It is also possible that the publicity about the possibility of the team moving to downtown Providence has had a negative effect on attendance numbers.
According to the PawSox, attendance has been declining since 2008, although there was a jump in attendance, to more than 559,000, when the Red Sox won the World Series in 2013.
To date, the attendance total is 433,588, with an average of 6,570 per game. Last year, attendance for the entire season was 515,665, an average of 7,367 per game. The PawSox also won the league championship last year. Even with five games left, attendance will not be able to top last year’s numbers.
The team’s last game of the season is Labor Day, against the Buffalo Bisons.
Meanwhile, House Speaker Nicholas A. Mattiello has said that public support is key for a new Pawtucket Red Sox stadium proposal for Providence to move forward. PawSox owners want to build a new stadium on former Interstate 195 land along the Providence River.

  1. This comes as no surprise, the stadium is just average, and just average fits Rhode Island and it low aspirations citizenry perfectly. I have never lived in an area where people make a big deal out of driving 15 miles. Color the people in this state with three coats of paint – low initiative, small thinking, old fashioned!!
