PROVIDENCE – Free snacks in the workplace? A dream come true, or just another way of keeping employees tied to the office and their desks all day long?
Peapod.com, an online grocer delivering to both businesses and homes, has launched an online petition to advocate for free snacks for workers across the country.
Peapod pointed to research that ORC International conducted on its behalf that showed “the happiest workers are the best fed workers.”
It said the research found 56 percent of full-time employees are extremely or very happy with their current job, but that number jumps to 67 percent among employees whose offices provide free snacks.
“With such powerful data suggesting the impact of snacks, a fairly inexpensive soft benefit, it’s all the more shocking that only 16 percent of full-time employees reported having them readily available,” Peapod said.
By signing the petition, #FreeOfficeSnacks4All, workers also will enter their office into a sweepstakes to win a years’ worth of free snacks for an eligible office within Peapod’s service area. Participants will also receive a coupon for $50 off their first Peapod business delivery.
“At Peapod, we understand that getting through the work day isn’t always easy, and it’s a lot harder when you’re hungry and feeling sluggish,” Brad Porter, marketing director at Peapod, said in a statement. “Providing free office snacks is certainly a great employee perk, but we also believe a nourished and energized employee will produce their best work. By creating this pledge, we hope to make a small but valuable improvement to office culture and give employees everywhere the fuel they need.”
Peapod said it hopes the petition improves the workplace environment for workers and employers. It also noted that the research found 71 percent of respondents have had their personal snack, drink or meal stolen out of the communal office kitchen, “an unnecessary stress that could easily be avoided with free communal snacks.”
