Pell Center will produce play to focus on veterans

NEWPORT – The Pell Center at Salve Regina University won a special $10,850 grant from the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities to help produce “Ajax,” a Greek tragedy set in the Trojan War.
“Ajax” will be part of “Story in the Public Square,” a Pell Center initiative intended to improve public understanding of important issues by telling stories. The initiative is intended to spur community conversations about the challenges facing veterans returning from war.
The production will use a new translation of the play by James Scully and open at the university on Nov. 11, which is Veterans Day. Then, in partnership with Providence College, the production will tour the state. Dates, venues, and ticket information will be announced at a later date.
The grant was made possible by the National Endowment for the Humanities as part of its “Standing Together: The Humanities and the Experience of War” initiative, which supports veterans-related programming within each state. •
