People’s CU gives backpacks

MIDDLETOWN – People’s Credit Union employees delivered backpacks filled with school supplies to more than 100 students from all over Rhode Island on Aug. 22.
The backpacks were filled with pencils, notebooks, crayons, and other necessary supplies a child would need to start the school year with. Students that received the backpacks were from the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center in Newport, Reach Out LLC in North Kingstown and Good Neighbor Kitchen in Bristol.
The money was raised for the backpacks and the supplies through dress down days during the summer. This is the eighth year the Credit Union has done the backpack drive. It was coordinated by People’s Community Enhancement Committee, an employee volunteer committee that identifies volunteer opportunities for employees and builds relationships with organizations to help meet the needs of the communities we serve.
“The backpack drive is one of our favorite initiatives, we love seeing how excited the children are when they receive all their new school supplies. We are happy we can continue to help out local students in the communities we serve,” said Izilda Afonso, the event’s chairperson.
People’s Credit Union serves members through six locations in Bristol, Middletown, Newport, North Kingstown, Portsmouth and Wakefield.
The member-owned, state-chartered, federally insured, community credit union was established in 1922.
