HARVESTING HOPE FUNDRAISER

Southside Community Land Trust will hold a Harvesting Hope event from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 17 at the Steel Yard, 27 Sims Ave., Providence. The fundraising event will celebrate growing food in greater Providence and beyond. Guests will hear testimonials and visionary remarks while enjoying garden cocktails and food truck hors d’oeuvres. Attendees will leave with bags of produce grown by the organization’s Providence Community Growers Network. Tickets: $50. Proceeds will support core program activities. STEP UP FOR RIC NURSING

The School of Nursing of Rhode Island College will host Step Up for RIC Nursing, a Night to Shine, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 19 at Chapel Grille, Chapel Grille Boulevard, Cranston. The evening includes a buffet and live entertainment by Rhode Island College students enrolled in the department of music, theatre and dance. There will also be a silent auction. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Dean’s Development Fund, which promotes high-quality health care. Tickets: $100 per person. FRIAR 5K RACE

Providence College will hold the third annual Friar 5K race at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20 on its campus, 1 Cunningham Square, Providence. Participants will walk or run a 3.1-mile route through the campus and the surrounding neighborhood, beginning and ending at Harkins Hall. Awards will be given to top finishers in each age group. Participants are invited to the Friar Fan Fest following the race. The event includes awards, live entertainment, a farmer’s market and refreshments. Pre-registration packet pick-up will be Friday, Oct. 19 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the college’s Slavin Center Atrium. GLORIA GEMMA FLAMES OF HOPE WEEKEND

The seventh annual Gloria Gemma Flames of Hope weekend begins Friday, Oct. 5 at 6 p.m. with a ribbon cutting ceremony and 2013 “Celebrate Hope, Celebrate Life” calendar unveiling at the Providence Marriott Downtown, 1 Orms St., Providence. Beginning at noon on Saturday, Oct. 6 there will be an opening ceremony followed by educational and health exhibits at Station Park, 100 Gaspee St., Providence. At 5:30 p.m., there will be a Pink Party with food, live music, dessert and dancing. Admission: $25. All proceeds benefit the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation. Following a torch procession from the State House to Waterplace Park, the WaterFire basins will be lit Saturday at 7:45 p.m. The weekend wraps up Sunday, Oct. 7 with the fourth annual Gloria Gemma 5K to be held from 11:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Station Park. This year’s 5K includes the inaugural Kids 1K, open to children 14 and younger only. It will be held from 10:15 to 10:45 a.m. Participants may register at the event or pick up a registration packet on Friday, Oct. 5 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Providence Marriott Downtown. TASTE OF THE HILL

The Federal Hill House Association will host its 10th annual Taste of the Hill Fundraiser from 6 to 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday Oct. 24 at Johnson & Wales University’s Culinary Arts Museum, 315 Harborside Blvd., Providence. The event features food and wine samples from restaurants, caterers and bakeries of Federal Hill. Other entertainment includes music, a silent auction and art.
