WINNEPAUG POND CLEANUP

Serve Rhode Island is in need of volunteers to assist with cleanup efforts in the north shore area of Westerly’s Winneapaug Pond. During Saturdays in March and April, crews will be dispatched to the area to haul out debris that could disrupt the ecologically sensitive wildlife and salt pond shellfishing area. The debris, a result of Sandy, includes building materials, decking, rooftops and contents of demolished businesses, including unknown amounts of household detergents and other chemicals. Crews will work from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Those with pick-up trucks and lawn tractors with light duty trailers are encouraged to pitch in. All debris will be transported about 200 yards from the pond’s edge to an area off of a narrow dirt path. For more information or to sign up, contact Cyndi at (401) 331-2298 or cmyers@serverhodeisland.org.
