NEW YEAR’S SWINGIN’ EVE
The New Bedford Whaling Museum will host a New Year’s celebration from 7 to 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013 at the New Bedford Whaling Museum, 18 Johnny Cake Hill, New Bedford. The event will feature food, a cash bar, music of The Phil Sanborn Sextet with special guest Dori Legge and a view of the city’s fireworks display from the Bourne Building. A midnight countdown will be held at 9 p.m. and kids can participate by releasing balloons from the mezzanine when the clock strikes twelve. The event will benefit the education programs of the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra and the New Bedford Whaling Museum. Cost: $50 adults; $15 children. HANGOVER CLASSIC
The East Bay Striders will host the 29th annual “Hangover Classic 5 Miler” beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014 at VFW Post 237, 850 Hope St., Bristol. The five-mile race will follow a course through Colt State Park. Awards will be presented for the top two men and women runners along with the first male and first female that place in the following categories: junior (18 and under); open (19 to 29 years); sub master (30 to 39 years); master (40 to 49 years); senior (50 to 59 years); veteran (60 to 69 years) and grand veteran (70+). Refreshments will follow the race. Proceeds will benefit the George E. Dion Memorial Scholarship Fund. Cost: $25 per person (mail-in entry); $30 per person (day of). The South County Race Series will host the “Old Mountain 5k Trail Race” beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014 at Old Mountain Field, 831 Kingstown Road, Wakefield. The five kilometer race will follow a course along the wooded trails of Old Mountain Field in the heart of Wakefield. Open to all ages. No dogs. No strollers. Headphones strongly discouraged. HAVE A HEART COCKTAIL PARTY
The Potter League will be host its 41st annual “Have A Heart Cocktail Party and Auction” from 6:30 to 8:30 on Friday, Feb. 7, 2014 at the Hotel Viking, 1 Bellevue Ave., Newport. The event will include a preview party from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and features a live and silent auction with more than 250 items, including art, jewelry, animal-related gifts, clothing and accessories, golf packages, wine baskets, gift certificates, spa treatments, items for the home and garden, travel getaways and more. The event will feature a luncheon with New York Times bestselling author Laura Schroff and shopping from area artisans and shop vendors. Each shopping vendor will donate 20 percent of their sales to Blessings in a Backpack Rhode Island, which feeds more than 500 students in five schools every weekend during the school year.
