5K After five
There will be a free 5K on Aug. 27 beginning at 6:30 p.m. along Lippitt Memorial Park at 1015 Hope St., Providence. There will also be a warm up beginning at Rhode Runner at 6 p.m. This race will be held along Blackstone Boulevard and traffic will not be closed to use caution. Following the race, there will be a raffle with prizes such as a pair of New Balance Shoes, Fuelbelts and Believe I Am gear. Raffle tickets can be purchased or exchanged for one non-perishable food item. All proceeds from the raffle will benefit the Rhode Island Food Bank. Cost: $2 per ticket, $8 for five tickets, $15 for 10 tickets. Individual donations can also be made to the Food Bank. The Kent Hospital will sponsor the NK5K road race/walk on Sept. 6 at North Kingstown High School at 150 Fairway Dr., North Kingstown. The 5K (3.1 miles) race will begin at 10 a.m. and participants will follow a route around town before returning to the high school. Youth races begin at 8:30 a.m. and it includes 100M (ages 1-5), 400M (one lap, ages 6-9), 800M (2 laps, ages 10-13). There will be separate races for boys and girls and all races will be run on the track. There will also be youth races and a 5K on Sept. 5 from 3-6 p.m. at the West Bay Family YMCA at 7540 Post Rd., North Kingstown. There will be awards following the race for the top 3 men and women in 5 different age categories. There will also be a team award. A portion of funds raised will be donated to the North Kingstown School Department to use for sports and extracurricular activities. Participants must register online before Sept. 4 and mail entries must be sent before August 30. NK5K participants receive a t-shirt with entry. Friends of RI CASA will host a clambake on Sept. 6 from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Francis Farm at 27 Francis Farm Road, Rehoboth. There will be field games, karaoke, music, raffles and a video arcade. The three buffet options include kids hotdog/hamburger ($14), clambake with lobster ($65), and BBQ chicken ($45); each ticket also includes baked beans, garden salad, potato chips and watermelon. Additional donations can also be made. The Rhode Island Court Appointed Special Advocates program provides legal advocacy for children. Tap into your wild side during Brew at the Zoo, hosted by the Roger Williams Park Zoo on Sept. 6 from 4-9 p.m. at 1000 Elmwood Ave., Providence. There will be more than 100 craft beers to sample from 50 brewers in the region, including Bucket Brewery, Green Flash and Lagunitas. The education animals will mix and mingle with the crowd and live entertainment will include Mike Provenzano and Brian Jarvis playing acoustic covers, Rick Adam performing as a four-stilted animal character and a five-member Bavarian Hofbrau Band (in festive attire) playing German music. Party animals will also receive a commemorative Brew at the Zoo glass. This event is 21+. The Zoo will close at 2 p.m. to prepare for the event (last admission at noon). All proceeds go towards the Zoo's improvement, education and conservation programs. Cost: $50 per person, $25 designated drivers. Cirque du soiree
Adoption RI will host the eighth annual Friends Giving Back soiree on Sept. 6 from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m. at the Twin River Event Center at Twin River Road, Lincoln. There will be dinner, a silent auction a Cirque du Soleil-type performance and live music by Boston’s Hot Mess. There will also be celebrity guests and other surprises. This event is hosted by Frank and Kathy Carpano and Bill and Karen Ciotti. All proceeds benefit Adoption RI. Cost: $60 in advance, $75 at the door.
