The New Bedford Whaling Museum will host a New Year’s celebration from 7 to 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013 at the New Bedford Whaling Museum, 18 Johnny Cake Hill, New Bedford. The event will feature food, a cash bar, music of The Phil Sanborn Sextet with special guest Dori Legge and a view of the city's fireworks display from the Bourne Building. A midnight countdown will be held at 9 p.m. and kids can participate by releasing balloons from the mezzanine when the clock strikes twelve. The event will benefit the education programs of the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra and the New Bedford Whaling Museum. Cost: $50 adults; $15 children. The East Bay Striders will host the 29th annual “Hangover Classic 5 Miler” beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014 at VFW Post 237, 850 Hope St., Bristol. The five-mile race will follow a course through Colt State Park. Awards will be presented for the top two men and women runners along with the first male and first female that place in the following categories: junior (18 and under); open (19 to 29 years); sub master (30 to 39 years); master (40 to 49 years); senior (50 to 59 years); veteran (60 to 69 years) and grand veteran (70+).
