Pleasant Valley Parkway Bridge to be replaced

PROVIDENCE – The Pleasant Valley Parkway Bridge will be replaced, with substantial work tentatively scheduled to begin next spring, the R.I. Department of Transportation announced last week.

The Providence bridge carries Dean Street over the Woonasquatucket River. Identified as structurally deficient by state inspectors, it is among 230 bridges in Rhode Island that are in need of repair or replacement.

More than 40,000 vehicles use the bridge daily, according to a message from DOT spokeswoman Rose Jones. The replacement will require a temporary bridge closure. The timing and detour maps will be made available when the project draws near.

The $5.6 million contract for the bridge replacement was awarded to Cardi Corp., along with a 5 percent budget contingency of $280,000. The work is expected to be substantially complete by the fall of 2017.
