PROVIDENCE – In Rhode Island, Democrat Hillary Clinton has a 20- point advantage over Republican Donald Trump in the presidential election, according to an Emerson College poll released Thursday.
The poll shows Clinton leading Trump 52 percent to 32 percent in the Ocean State. The poll also showed that 5 percent of Rhode Island voters each are supporting Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson and Green Party candidate Jill Stein. Another 6 percent said they are unsure who they will vote for in the Nov. 8 election.
Rhode Island’s sample size for the poll was 600, and the margin of error is estimated at 3.9 percent.
Data was collected using an Interactive Voice Response system of landlines only from Oct. 2-4. Polls also were taken in Arizona, Florida and Nevada.
According to Emerson, Bernie Sanders’ primary voters may be coming around to the Clinton camp in Rhode Island and Arizona.
In Emerson’s Sept. 7 survey, only 50 percent of Sanders voters in Rhode Island said they planned to vote for Clinton. In the current poll, that figure jumped to 67 percent, and almost eight of every 10 Sanders Arizona voters, or 78 percent, now favor Clinton.
In two of the states independents favor Trump, while Clinton is ahead in the other two. He is up by 11 points in Nevada (47 percent to 36 percent) and 6 in Rhode Island (42 percent to 36 percent). Clinton has a 1-point edge among independents in Florida (40 percent to 39 percent) and a 5-point margin in Arizona (42 percent to 37 percent).
