GLOCESTER – David Moscarelli, a science teacher and digital-portfolio coordinator at Ponaganset High School in the Foster-Glocester Regional School District, has been named 2015 Rhode Island Teacher of the Year.

Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee made the announcement in a surprise ceremony Monday morning at the high school.

Moscarelli, a Providence resident, has taught alternative energy, biology and more at the high school after earning his 1992 undergraduate degree from the University of Rhode Island and a master’s degree in biology from Brown University.

In his role as the high school’s digital-portfolio coordinator for past 11 years, he led design and implementation of one of the first digital-portfolio graduation requirements in the country. He also has been instructional technology coordinator at the school for the past 19 years, working with his colleagues to integrate technology into the classroom.

Eva-Marie Mancuso, chairwoman of the R.I. Board of Education, called Moscarelli a “consummate educator” and “technology guru.” And Deborah A. Gist, commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education, praised Moscarelli’s commitment to using technology to support students’ educational journeys.

With this title, Moscarelli, who has taught at Ponaganset High for 22 years, becomes a candidate for the national award.

“David Moscarelli is not only recognized as an excellent classroom teacher who sets high standards and provides his students with individual support, but he is also highly regarded as a technology leader at Ponaganset High School,” Chafee said. “He has devoted his professional life to classroom teaching, and he will represent our state well as the 2015 Teacher of the Year.”

Following the ceremony, Inskip’s Warwick Automall provided Moscarelli with a Smart Electric Drive car for his use during his time as teacher of the year.

Other R.I. Teacher of the Year program donors have included: the Hassenfeld Family Foundation and the Rhode Island Foundation, Alex and Ani, the Bank of America, Paul Choquette, Collette, Cox Communications, Ned Handy, Hasbro, Johnson & Wales University and Smart Technology.
