After 26 years in business, Bay Computer Associates has moved beyond contract engineering to development of its first product line.

The small, portable devices in its Keystone Series are designed for engineers who are testing new computer systems and programs and need portable, relatively inexpensive prototyping tools.

In a Kickstarter campaign, Cranston-based BCA is trying to raise $5,000 to create a line of the USB-compatible devices, which come with corresponding software.

The Keystone Relay will allow a user to turn things on and off, so, for example, its application could include using a laptop to remotely lock an apartment door or unlock one. The Keystone 10IN is a complementary tool that allows its user to configure connected sensors. So, an application could include controlling the heat in your home.

Dave Durfee, the CEO and chief scientist at Bay Computer Associates, said the goal is to provide simple, inexpensive tools for engineers trying to design more complicated, custom systems.

“Our hope is we’re going to have a whole line of these,” he said. •
