Portsmouth turbine in need of costly repairs

Posted 7/23/12

PORTSMOUTH – The town’s wind turbine has been shut down due to a mechanical failure, the Bristol Phoenix reported. The Town Council must now decide whether to replace the part or first try to find out what caused it to fail.

At last week’s meeting, the Town Council was told that the gearbox in the 1.5-megawatt turbine has failed. The reason for the failure is currently unknown. However, oil samples show metal shavings inside the gearbox filter, the newspaper said. The turbine has been shut down since June 18.

Replacing the gearbox could cost about $400,000. The turbine’s warranty expired when the manufacturer, AAER, went out of business, the Phoenix said. •
