‘Premier science comedian’ comedian to feature at Tech Collective awards

PROVIDENCE –The Rhode Island Tech Collective announced last week that “science-centric” comedian Brian Malow is slated to perform at its inaugural Bioscience Awards celebration.

The nonprofit bioscience and information-industry group said it is hosting the public event to recognize “bioscience champions” and innovators in local industry. Within the next week, Tech Collective plans to announce five winners to be honored at the event, taking place Thursday, May 2, at the Rhode on the Pawtuxet in Cranston.

The Tech Collective will also recognize one “superlative” Rhode Island science teacher with the Amgen Award for Science, which is accepting applications both public and private instructors. The event’s chief sponsor is Amgen Inc., the biopharmaceutical giant with a West Greenwich production facility.

The Tech Collective brought in Malow to show industry leaders in pharmaceuticals, R&D, medical the funny side of their professions. “The Rhode Island Bioscience Awards ceremony is a celebration of our industry’s accomplishments – what better way to do so than to amp up the energy in the room and have everyone laughing,” said Melissa Punchak, manager of organizational programs for Tech Collective.

Malow, who bills himself as the “Earth’s premier science comedian,” has won acclaim from numerous tech agencies and companies, including Apple Inc. and NASA, according to the Tech Collective. His work combines comedic craft with the goal of improving the public-speaking skills of industry professionals.

“What a perfect event for my first-ever performance in Rhode Island,” said Malow. “I look forward to meeting, learning more about, and, of course, laughing with, Rhode Island’s bioscience professionals.”

Industry professionals in the medical-device field, R&D, pharmaceuticals and related areas are encouraged to register to attend the event at General admission, which also includes a three-course dinner, is $85. The cost for Tech Collective members is $70.
