SOUTH KINGSTOWN – Pro-Change Behavior Systems Inc. has received its first Small Business Innovation Research contract from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the health-risk research and coaching company announced Wednesday.

The Phase I SBIR contract was awarded for research on using technology to help prevent substance abuse among members of the military, with the goal of developing a functional prototype intervention to be tested in a small pilot.

“While many effective, evidence-based substance abuse prevention programs exist in the general population, not all meet the unique needs of military personnel, and even fewer of those programs take advantage of the military’s advanced use of innovative technologies,” said Dr. Kerry E. Evers, senior vice president of Pro-Change and the project lead.

The project will focus on the prevention of substance abuse of tobacco, alcohol and prescription drugs, as well as other factors that may impact substance abuse behaviors, such as high stress, abnormal sleeping habits and depression. A team of military personnel will be engaged throughout the project to offer insight on the prototype Pro-Change develops, the company said.
