PROVIDENCE – Where are the best places for tech jobs?

San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, Calif., in the heart of the Silicon Valley, tops the list by NerdWallet, which ranked 100 of the largest metropolitan areas to come up with its findings. A total of 370 metros were surveyed.
NerdWallet said 126 out of every 1,000 jobs in this metro area are in the tech industry, and that the average tech salary is highest in the country at more than $130,000 a year. Rents also are high, with a median of more than $1,600 a month. Apple, Adobe, eBay and Google are some of the tech companies housed here.
In comparison, a tech job in the Providence-Fall River-Warwick metropolitan area nets an average salary of $84,774.
Median rent is $885 a month, and the number of tech jobs per 1,000 number 26.7. Those statistics land the Providence metro 77th on the list.
The rest of the top five places on the list after the San Jose area are:

  • Huntsville, Ala., average tech salary of $92,000; 68 tech employees per 1,000 jobs
  • Seattle-Bellevue-Everett, Wash., average tech salary $108,472.21; 77.6 tech employees per 1,000 jobs
  • Durham-Chapel Hill, N.C., average tech salary of $94,535.35; 66.2 tech employees per 1,000 jobs
  • Boulder, Colo., average tech salary of $97,756; 70.8 tech employes per 1,000 jobs

The Boston-Cambridge-Quincy metro area ranked 10th for an average tech salary of $102,939, and 57 tech jobs per 1,000 people.
