PROVIDENCE – Providence County has been designated as a primary natural disaster area due to losses caused by a recent drought, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said Friday.
“Our hearts go out to those Rhode Island farmers and ranchers affected by recent natural disasters,” Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said in a statement.

Farmers and ranchers in Bristol and Kent counties in Rhode Island also qualify for natural disaster assistance because their counties are contiguous.

Farmers and ranchers in Windham County in Connecticut, and Bristol, Norfolk and Worcester counties in Massachusetts also qualify for natural disaster assistance because their counties are contiguous.

These were designated natural disaster areas on Sep. 9, making all qualified farm operators in the designated areas eligible for low interest emergency loans from USDA’s Farm Service Agency, providing that eligibility requirements are met. Farmers in eligible counties have eight months from the date of the declaration to apply for loans to help cover part of their actual losses. Numerous programs are available through FSA to help eligible farmers recover from adversity.

Other FSA programs that can provide assistance, but do not require a disaster declaration, include the Emergency Conservation Program; Livestock Forage Disaster Program; Livestock Indemnity Program; Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honeybees, and Farm-Raised Fish Program; and the Tree Assistance Program.
