Providence County leads population growth in R.I.

PROVIDENCE – Providence County experienced the most population growth out of any county in Rhode Island from July 1, 2014 to July 1, 2015, the U.S. Census Bureau said Thursday.

In Providence County, the population rose 0.2 percent over the period, followed by Bristol County and Washington County at 0.1 percent each.

Providence County added 1,448 people over the period, more than any other county in the state, the Census Bureau said. It was followed by Washington County, which grew by 87 people, and Bristol County which added 37 people.

Newport County’s population was considered stagnant, as it lost only 25 people over the time period, while Kent County experienced a 0.1 percent decline, a loss of 156 people.

Providence County is the most populous county in Rhode Island, with 633,473 residents, followed by Kent County with 164,801 and Washington County at 126,517.

The least populous county in the Ocean State is Bristol, with 49,084 residents, preceded by Newport County at 82,423 residents, the Census Bureau said.
Rhode Island’s population climbed 0.1 percent over the year to 1,056,298, representing 1,391 additional people.
Rhode Island again ranked third, behind only the District of Columbia and New Jersey, for “highest density” in 2015 for its population of 1,021.7 per square mile.
