Providence Rotary foundation gives grants

PROVIDENCE – The Providence Rotary Charities Foundation has distributed grants totaling $55,750 to 27 local nonprofit agencies.
The annual grants from the foundation, which is a charitable arm of the Rotary Club of Providence, are focused primarily on aiding children living in and around Providence. Purposes of the awards range from distributing books and helping the disadvantaged to providing camp experiences and helping young men develop careers.
Recipients and amounts of this year’s grants are:
Blessings in a Backpack, $3,000; Books Are Wings, $3,000; Camp JORI, $2,000; Camp Ruggles, $2,000; Camp Surefire, $2,000; Community Preparatory School, $2,500; Family Service of Rhode Island, $2,000; FirstWorks, $2,000; Girl Scouts of Rhode Island, Inc., $1,500; HeadsUp, Inc., $1,000; and Inspiring Minds, $1,500.
Also, PARI Independent Living Center, $2,000; Paul Cuffee School, $1,500; Providence ¡CityArts for Youth! Inc., $1,000; Providence Community Library, $3,000; Read to Succeed, $2,000; ResilientKids, $3,000; Rhode Island Urban Debate League, $3,000, School One, $2,000; Sojourner House, $1,750; Sophia Academy, $3,000; Southside Community Land Trust, $1,000; The Samaritans, $2,000; Whitmarsh House, $2,500; Women’s Center of Rhode Island, $1,500; YMCA of Greater Providence East Side / Mount Hope Branch, $2,000; YWCA Rhode Island, $2,000.
The foundation also purchases dictionaries and recreational reading books each year for distribution by club members to all third- and fourth-grade students in the Providence school system. Resources come from donations by Providence Rotarians and proceeds of special events organized by the club, including the annual Providence Rotary Street Painting Festival.
