PROVIDENCE – The Providence School District ranks No. 37 on a list of the top paying school districts in each state for first-year teachers, according to Top Masters in Education, an online guide to earning a master’s in education degree.
The website said that Providence’s $37,740 starting salary “is competitive for the East Coast” and that the school “has made great strides in meeting the needs of all its students,” including its “special needs population and growing Latino student body.”
The website stated that the Providence School District “is an ideal employer for a first year teacher,” and that it boasts a 26:1 teacher-student ratio. It has approximately 23,000 pupils at 43 schools.
According to published reports, the Providence Teachers Union this week rejected a three-year contract proposal that would have removed a no-layoff clause and allowed management to create a new system to give extra pay for extra work, among other changes.
The top paying public school district for a first-year teacher was Katonah-Lewisboro School District in Katonah, N.Y. at $84,407, where the cost of living is exceptionally high, according to the website.
